Eduvos Home Security Survey

A comparative study of home security system adoption and usage across different age groups of residents in the southern suburbs of Cape Town.

Greetings resident,

My name is Matthew Gammon. I live in the neighborhood and am conducting research through the Faculty of Information Technology at Eduvos, where I am supervised by Dr Ayinde Usman.

You are kindly invited to participate in a study that involves research into smart home devices and home security systems.

Smart home devices include items such as automated lights, voice assistants, and sensors that connect to your home's Wi-Fi. They are designed to let you control, schedule, and monitor your home remotely using just your phone, even when you are not at home.

The aim and purpose of this research is to understand how different age groups adopt and use these modern security systems, and to identify the specific challenges or barriers residents face when interacting with complex digital interfaces. The study involves a single questionnaire, with an estimated duration of 12 minutes.

This study will provide no direct benefits to participants. But it will lay the groundwork for improved Smart Home and security products.

The study is low risk and should not result in any discomfort. However, should you become distressed at any point, please reach out for assistance at www.sadag.org.

This study has been ethically reviewed and approved by the Eduvos Research Ethics Committee FITREC2026/H148.

In the event of any problems or concerns you may contact the research supervisor Dr Ayinde Usman at Ayinde.Usman@eduvos.com.

Participation in this research is entirely voluntary, and you may withdraw participation at any point. In the event of refusal to participate or withdrawal of participation, you will not incur penalty or loss.

Should you have any questions, feel to send an email to the researcher eduv13096270@vossie.net.
